Gundam Build Fighters Try Episode 12

Today in Mecha Analysis, we kick off the first Gundam episode of the new year with Gundam Build Fighters Try. Something to keep in mind when looking at the Gunpla: Returning from Gundam Build Fighters, the ones responsible for mechanical design of Gundam Build Fighters Try are as follows,

  • Kunio Okawara: THE Gundam designer, designing the original RX-78-2, and Zaku II along with many designs through the years. He's had his hand in Zeta, ZZ, 0080, F90, F91, 0083, Victory, G Gundam, 08th, Wing, X, Turn A, SEED, 00, Unicorn, and many other non-Gundam anime. Holy crap this list is long.
  • Not much is said about Junichi Akutsu, Junya Ishigaki, and Kenji Teraoka.
  • Kanetake Ebikawa, though has been working as a mechanical designer since the late 90s with anime like Blue Submarine No.6 and Full Metal Panic!, did not start designing for the Gundam franchise until 2007 with Mobile Suit Gundam 00. Other notable works include Gunpla Builders Beginning G, Gundam AGE, and Euerka Seven: AO.

Episode 13
Is there a correlation with how good an episode is with the amount of involvement of the Meijin? It's as if the show got much better in the past two episodes as he steps into the spotlight. One character I am not certain about is Shia. I did not like how she was introduced, though the fact that she is the third team member of the Gunpla Academy means maybe I will change my mind about her in the coming episodes.
After the followup to last episode, we see a battle royal hosted by the third Meijin. Four Gunpla duke it out in a free for all match.

Zaku Managarumu

Matsunaga returns with his white Zaku combining parts from his team members' suits, Zaku Kraken and Zaku Alvaldi, most notably the Psychomu weapons. Unfortunately Matsunaga gets brushed away quite quickly by Gunpla Academy's ace.

Cherudim Gundam

From what I can tell, the suit used by Karima Kei is a stock Cherudim Gundam. The fact that it is not his "favorite mobile armor" reinforces the possibilty that it is merely a stock Gunpla. Kei brings out the Shield Bits for a flashy fight against the other 00 Gundam, but, like Matsunaga, is brushed aside with ease (and a face of frowny disappointment from Kijima Wilfrid).

Build Burning Gundam

With the help of the mysterious girl, Shia, Sekai fixes and improves his Gunpla. The improvements are similar to RX-78-2's grease upgrade in that nothing visually is upgraded, but the efficiency of Sekai's fight is improved.

An all out brawl with Kijima Wilfrid ends with a tie and Build Burning Gundam's arms crumbling from fatigue leading to team Try Hards motivation to help Seaki improve his Gunpla on top of improving their own. The mid-season upgrade is at hand!

Transient Gundam

This is the star antagonist of this episode, Kijima Wilfrid's Gunpla. He is a man who strives to become the fourth Hokage Meijin and lives as such. His team mate, Saga Adou, praises him for his passion and drive to become the Meijin.

This blue and white Gundam is based on the Exia. Major aesthetic differences include sharper pieces throughout, the sword mount on its lower back, and the blue fins on its upper back. It's main weapon is a lance with an oversized head. With a single swing, he brings out these homing lasers that act like funnels.

Kijima seems to also be well versed in Plavsky Fa Chi, a technique created by Nils Nielsen. After discaring his weapon, Kijima proceeds to pursue Sekai with hands of blue (Firefly anyone?). Though it is not mentioned he is using the technique, it should be safe to assume it is Plavsky Fa Chi or a variant (then again, I've been known to be dead wrong).

I can't wait for the next episode! New opening (most likely), new mobile suits, GET EXCITE!
