Gundam G no Reconguista Episode 23

We continue Mecha Analysis with episode 24 of Gundam G No Reconguista. Something to keep in mind when looking at the mechanical designs of Gundam G No Reconguista: The ones responsible for mechanical design are as follows,

  • Akira Yasuda, known for designing mechs in Turn A Gundam, Code Geass and Overman King Gainer.
  • Kimitoshi Yamane, notable for mechanical designs in G Gundam, Gundam SEED, SEED Destiny, SEED Stargazer, IGLOO, and Eureka Seven: AO
  • Not much can be found about Ippei Gyobu. I think he's new.

Episode 24
Kill-em-all Tomino's back plucking the emotional strings of his fan base and killing off characters that we all know and love! Is there an end to this violence, Tomino? IS THERE? As we come closer to the end of the series, I am glad I kept up with it week by week. I do not know if I would be able to process this show on a binge.

Yggdrasil

Is that the Goa'uld's Cheops class Warship? Where's general O'Neill when we need him? Jokes aside, this ship only makes a brief appearance, showing off some calaidescope shields and rapid grow laser trees...

...some super sweet tree laser animations that will never be seen in an episode ever again.

We also get a glimpse of Mask's latest (and most likely final) suit: Kabakari is the name given on the site (and posted on Gundam Guy).

G-Arcane

Finally this mobile suit gets an upgrade! The Nu Gundam-style funnel-like objects along G-Arcane's back is named "Full Dress." So far, from what we have seen, it has the ability to deflect lasers with...lasers. I wonder if the Full Dress can be used as funnels too.

Which kit will we see first, Perfect Pack expansion, or Full Dress expansion?

Late again! I keep doing this to myself - putting off writing these articles. Maybe I should take a break from Monster Hunter, especially as the show winds down. Either way, I'm quite excited to see how Tomino will conclude this show. What will all this fighting and traveling come to?
See you tomorrow.

Gundam Build Fighters Try Episode 21

Today on Mecha Analysis, we look at episode 22 of Gundam Build Fighters Try. Something to keep in mind when looking at the Gunpla: Returning from Gundam Build Fighters, the ones responsible for mechanical design of Gundam Build Fighters Try are as follows,

  • Kunio Okawara: THE Gundam designer, designing the original RX-78-2, and Zaku II along with many designs through the years. He's had his hand in Zeta, ZZ, 0080, F90, F91, 0083, Victory, G Gundam, 08th, Wing, X, Turn A, SEED, 00, Unicorn, and many other non-Gundam anime. Holy crap this list is long.
  • Not much is said about Junichi Akutsu, Junya Ishigaki, and Kenji Teraoka.
  • Kanetake Ebikawa, though has been working as a mechanical designer since the late 90s with anime like Blue Submarine No.6 and Full Metal Panic!, did not start designing for the Gundam franchise until 2007 with Mobile Suit Gundam 00. Other notable works include Gunpla Builders Beginning G, Gundam AGE, and Euerka Seven: AO.

Episode 22
Sakai is the only character
outside of the protagonist's circle (include Mr. Ral) that
consistently shows up throughout the show. He is the only character I can label as an overarching enemy. Unfortunately this story arc has come to an end with the championships to be determined by the Gunpla Academy versus Team Try Hards. To me, the most interesting rivalry in this show has come to an end - so long, Osaka boy, you will be missed!

Team Try Hards

Once again, not much new is seen from Try Fighters, though there was a lot of Plavsky gate usage - first used as a shield to protect Yuuma in Gundam Unicorn final battle style, and second as a magnifier for Yuuma's beam rifles.

We also see Sekai taking a back seat this time! He plays the defensive role to help Yuuma out as his last move for the battle. Could that be considered a new technique for the Try Burning Gundam? Seriously though, he is NEVER the one defending...

Team Build Busters

Sakai pulls out all the stops on his masterpiece and he is met with defeat. Of all the characters and their Gunpla, Sakai and Gundam Tryon 3 has been the best story line. I wish the writers introduced Sakai's teammates and their relationship, or lack thereof, before Sakai's desire to enter the competition. Despite not having that bit, I'm sad to see this custom ZZ go.

TRYON 3 BANZAI!!
The first move we see from Tryon 3 is the Boomerang Stagger. Tryon takes its V-fin off and uses it like Gurren Lagann's shades! I wonder if both Gurren Lagann and Tryon 3 borrowed this technique from a Super Robot anime of the 70s (sorry, too lazy to do that research).

Tryon's second new skill, as shouted by Sakai in Super Robot finesse, is Raptor Breaker - a kick assisted by its leg's thrusters. I am continued to be reminded of how awesome Gurren Lagann is through this mobile suit.

Prompted by Sakai's teammate, Tryon's third attack is the Howl, Liger. It acts like the Phoenix's Graviton Beam from Starcraft II, levitating the target for a period of time which gave Sakai to use what would be his most powerful move.

Summoning the Hyper Minovsky Chohoken, Sakai defeats Star Winning Gundam and Try Burning Gundam with Tryzan One, Two, Three.

Hyper Minovsky Chohoken
Tryzan One, Two Three!
Your run in the tournament was a good one, Tryon 3. I hope to see you on my desk as a High Grade Build Fighters kit in the very near future! Until then, I have to watch some of the most lackluster rivalries in this show.

That is all for now. I hope the finals are not as bad as I predict them to be. That is a week from now, so I won't dwell on it too much. Stay tuned for Mecha Analysis on G no Reconguista! Also I cannot stress this enough, REGISTRATION FOR GUNPLA LOLLAPALOOZA ENDS THIS FRIDAY. PLEASE SIGN UP IF YOU ARE EVEN REMOTELY INTERESTED! Click on the links on top of the page for more information. I hope to see you all there! Good luck and see you next time!

Gundam G no Reconguista Episode 22

We continue Mecha Analysis with episode 23 of Gundam G No Reconguista. Something to keep in mind when looking at the mechanical designs of Gundam G No Reconguista: The ones responsible for mechanical design are as follows,

  • Akira Yasuda, known for designing mechs in Turn A Gundam, Code Geass and Overman King Gainer.

  • Not much can be found about Ippei Gyobu. I think he's new.

Episode 23
What just happened in this episode? So much thrilling action, gripping emotions, and generically branded moisturizer packed into one episode! I found it hard to talk about this episode because it was pretty confusing on first watch (not to mention the massive distraction that is Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate). Hopefully I did not miss anything amidst of all the action for this episode.

Wuxia

We see our second bike-like vehicle in this episode, this time piloted by a Wuxia. After seeing the potential of the Meteor Hopper, I'd love to see more of these vehicles as kits.

Coffin Bits (Hecate)

What is this thing and when will we get a kit of it? Apparently these suits are the frigates of the force. Their only purpose is to absorb the enemy's volleys and prevent damage of the main ship. I did not catch the name if it was said. Thank you Droyer for clearing that up, I must have not been paying attention enough to catch the name "Coffin Bits" in the scene right before they deployed.

Thanks again, Droyer!

Guy Trash

We see this suit make a return, this time with offensive use of its shower curtain. The suit definitely looks more appealing in action, but as a kit, I can't see this thing doing so hot (not that the G no Reconguista High Grades are doing so hot to begin with). At least it looked like a badass in this episode.
G-Self
Clearly the episode was a showcase of the Perfect Pack's true ability. Bellri uses three different abilities based on previous backpacks - Reflector, Torque, and Assault.

The Perfect pack articulates its rear fins to imitate the previous packs and magically forms the rest of the pack through Television static. The suit also changes colors accordingly.

All of this seems like a strange mix of technology of the Universal Century, Cosmic Era, and Anno Domini. I wonder if Tomino is going to go butterfly with the G-Self in the finale (inb4 P-Bandai Online Exclusive effect parts).

There we have it, episode 23 complete! I hope to see you all tomorrow bright and early for this week's episode of Gundam Build Fighters Try! Also, this week is the last week to enter into Gunpla Lollapalooza! Make sure you submit your entry by this Friday (13th March)! Even if you don't think you have what it takes to win, just build with us - the worst that could happen is your chance to win a MG Ball Ver. Ka! Please join us for some building action!

Gundam Build Fighters Try Episode 20

Today on Mecha Analysis, we look at episode 21 of Gundam Build Fighters Try.

Other notable works include Gunpla Builders Beginning G, Gundam AGE, and Euerka Seven: AO.

Episode 21
It has been quite some time since this show held any true tension. Even though anyone could predict the battle would turn out to be a 1v1 match, the push and pull of the skirmishes leading up to the final battle built up the match up rather than detract (like most of the cannon fodder has been in recent episodes).
The only complaint I have is the opportunity for a badass line in that latter half of the show: When Shia states 2 minutes remain in the match and they only need to survive to win, I was hoping for something along the lines of "Leave this to me, all I need is two minutes" following Wilfrid's line "I don't want such an incomplete victory."
I would have also liked the final match up to be a battle of speed and agility rather than a Dragonball energy blow out competition. Is that asking too much of this show? Probably - this episode already had some nice battles, I'll take what I can get.

Team Celestial Sphere

These guys had their spotlight: the features of each Gunpla from the Academy have been seen in previous episodes and not much new came about in this episode. That said, there is still something to talk about when it comes to this elite trio of battlers!

I guess we should start with Gundam The End. Nothing new is shown from this suit, but for some reason Lucas is surprised when The End removes his cloak and flashes everyone with its ugly body (it looks better than I first remembered). Lucas aside, the way his moves are showcased in this episode are more clear than previous, especially his Dead End Finger.

Also, as an ending note for The End, this guy sure can eat.

Gundam Portent's most amazing ability is not an attack, but the repair bots controlled by Haro. I cannot remember if this is a nod to the Haro of Gundam 00, but I got excited all the same by this scene. PLEASE INCLUDE THESE TINY BOTS IN THE GUNDAM PORTENT KIT (unlikely :C)!

For a Gundam named Transient Gundam, he's lasted quite a long time (Transient: adj. lasting only for a short time; impermanent.) Wilfrid uses Transient's special power, Transient Burst, which does...something. Is it a suicide attack? This is where my complaint comes in. Could we have a battle of agility and wit rather than Dragonball style energy wrestles? Both Full Cloth and Transient seem to fit the role of such and it would have made for an interesting looking battle, but the animators seemed to hold back on what could have been one of the best battles to exist (from start to finish). Oh well, I guess the radiance that lead to the future is all we'll get in this episode.

Team Von Braun

Morgenroete and I were hoping this team would win. It truly would have been the biggest upset in the series (especially with how many people are fawning over the Transient Gundam and its 00 fairy dust). Unfortunately we won't be seeing this team anymore, like all the other obscure enemies that appear and disappear in this show. The team consists of two supporting Geara Doga [C]'s and Lucas Nemesis' Crossbone Gundam X-1 Full Cloth, which seems to be the only stock Gunpla in this team despite being the team leader.

Seriously, there was nothing Lucas was hiding under that cloak. No special weapons, no special features - just a stock Crossbone (that was "well built"). Sure, the suit already has a lot of features and fans probably wanted to see an unaltered Full Cloth in the show, but for a character to be built up as something amazing, he has a pretty normal Gunpla.

It's really too bad. I would have loved to see Lucas move up (and possibly show off an upgraded Full Cloth for the finals).
One aspect I am a big fan of in this episode is the tactics Lucas uses with his team members. Unlike the fight against Junya in the previous episode, Lucas has a strategy in mind. He is in constant contact with his team members and using them for an alternative purpose than just fighting.

The two Geara Doga [C]'s are modified Geara Doga Heavy Weapons Type which use a high mobility pack made popular by Sauper's Geara Zulu in Gundam Unicorn (along with Gilboa's and Cuaron's suits). Instead of having the long ranged beam rifle equipped, an additional cooling fin is equipped, leaving a massive battery that is used to power their leader.

The orange Geara Doga is equipped with a Gatling Gun which looks like a strange mix between the two HG Customize Campaign Gatling Guns. The proportions are slightly off so replicating it would be somewhat hard no matter

The Blue Geara Doga has the stock beam rifle and shield.

It's a shame no other team had strategies as interesting as this one, though it might be the reason why this team was so interesting.

Can I also mention Field 8: Sky is a beautiful scenery?
That is all from me! I hope you all enjoyed this episode as much as I did and may the next semi-finals be just as epic! See you all for G no Reconguista's Mecha Analysis (hopefully tomorrow...).

Don't forget: register for the Gunpla Lollapalooza! The deadline is Friday next week. Trust me, you will only regret it if you do not sign up (there's no registration fee or dropout penalty)! Click on the links above to find out more about this /r/Gunpla-based competition!

Also, for those of you going to PAX East, I personally won't be going, but Moregenroete will be there for one of the days. He says "I'll probably be too busy looking for Monster Hunter schwag." I guess he will not be seeing you there? Remember to hydrate often and wear deodorant! I hope you enjoy your time at the convention!

Gundam G no Reconguista Episode 21

We continue Mecha Analysis with episode 22 of Gundam G No Reconguista.

Episode 22
This episode introduces quite a bit of technology to its viewers without much explanation. I was pretty confused and was watching particular scenes on repeat to figure out what the characters were referring to. I'm not sure if I like this - how will Tomino cover all of this in the next 4 or so episodes? Will we be seeing even more new suits or are we preparing for the end game right now?

Jirahha

This massive one-legged suit shows up. Not sure what the actual name will be, but from google translate and the name that Gundam Guy labeled it, the suit comes up as Jirahha. I guess we'll see what it is later on in the show.

The first thing we see from this mobile suit is its size. Comparing it to the other mobile suits in the image above, I wonder if we'll ever see a Gunpla kit of it. Probably not.

At the end of the episode, we see it show off its shields which happen to also disable the mobile suits around it. I have an inkling feeling someone will be dying in this mobile suit...

Zansgatt

Yet another grunt suit! No features are shown in this episode, though we do see a custom Zansgatt later in the show to be piloted by Kerbes.

This suit looks okay, but the head looks pretty silly. I'm not sure if I care for this suit - I liked Kerbes' previous suit, the Recksnow (Rex No or something), much more than this, but he was also overdue for an upgrade. I guess it can't be helped.

Montero

I never thought I'd see this suit again! Klim Nick's mobile suit is now a mass produced mobile suit.

G-Self

The protagonist suit gets a new pack: the Perfect Pack! This pack looks similar to the Space Pack but with more clear blue parts. The kit, like Try Burning Gundam, will be effect parts galore.

ALL THE EFFECTS!

One weapon we see from this new pack is the photon torpedoes. Sparkles emit from the back pack and magically removes objects in its path. This weapon is quite scary yet no one seems to react to it.

I wonder what else this new pack will bring to the table on this show's final leg.

Trinity and Dharma

These two suits are only teased in this episode as 'still in development.' I'm not sure what role they'll play in the next couple of episodes, but they certainly look like they're not going to be on the protagonist's side.
It is hard to see in the show, but the Trinity, from the concept images on the g-reco website, is shown to have three legs. What is the advantage of having three pointy legs? I guess we'll see soon enough.

The Dharma (Dahack? I'm so confused...) is a suit with a large heat resistance shell. Practical? I cannot say. Strange, definitely. Somehow I have a feeling this suit will be short lived.

That's all I got for now. I know I missed one, but the suit made such an insignificant cameo, I did not feel like including it this time. Maybe when it actually attacks the protagonist will I write about it. See you later this week for the next episode of Gundam Build Fighters!
