Review: HGBC Matsuri Weapon

Preamble
Morgenroete had plans for these weapons while he was out at sea, but it fell through and he never got around to assembling any of it. I decided I'd go ahead and review these weapons. What will become of these items afterwards? The world may never know.

Unbox
Like the Hyper Gunpla Battle Weapons I reviewed last year, the weapons from this Build Custom kit are seen in the anime Gundam Build Fighters. A few of them can be seen along side the Hyper Gunpla Battle Weapons in episode 13, and later show up in the final battle with Nils Nielsen's Sengoku Astray. As advertised on the side of the box, the weapons in this kit are labeled Kagijime (カギジメ), a pair of Water Spider (ミズグモ) with adapters, Rosary (数珠), Mallet (木槌), Axe (斧), Jushite (ジュシテ), Club (コンボウ), Pike (矛), Halberd or Naginata (ナギナタ), Matchlock (火縄銃), and three Kunai (クナイ).

The box art, like the Hyper Gunpla Battle Weapons, is nothing to write home about. Bandai's way of showing these custom parts seem pretty childish to me. At least the Sengoku Astray is the prime model showing off these weapons.

In the box, we find a single bag of two runners and a sticker sheet, and the instruction sheet. Quickly looking through the instructions, most of the builds were no more than three pieces. In fact, unlike the Hyper Gunpla Battle Weapons, most of the weapons in this kit are single pieces. This kit is starting to look like a disappointment.

Runners
The two runners in the kit are labeled A and B, both about the same size.

Runner 'A' uses a dull silver-ish plastic that is anything but easy on the eyes. Not much more can be said about runner 'B' and its hideous gold plastic, but it is a plus that the kit has a little color separation, unlike the Hyper Gunpla Weapons' monochrome gray. The stickers included are used mainly to put a shiny edge on bladed weapons, but from what I can tell, the silver of the stickers contrasts too much with the sort-of silver of the plastic.

All in all, the runner quality was not all too bad, however, the colors of the stickers and the plastic just looked quite cheap.

Parts
Because Sengoku Astray is the poster child of the box, I decided to borrow Morgenroete's unpainted and un-stickered High Grade kit. If you want to read his take on the this kit, click here!

First up we have the Matchlock. This rifle was one of the more attractive weapons on the list, just because I am a big fan of these classic looking rifles (like the one on the MG Shin Musha Gundam). However, assembling this three-piece weapon, one major problem arises. The bayonet, as seen in the image above, does not hold a position properly.
That's strike one, Matsuri Weapon. Not a great start for an already lackluster kit!

Next up we have the Axe. This two-piece monochromatic weapon has some interesting details, but the shape of the axe does not appeal to me, especially that strange looking chain. I guess it passes as an okay weapon, but it certainly does not win any points.

"Third time's a charm" as a certain someone put it. The club is the first weapon I am somewhat interested in. This weapon is comprised of four pieces and the way that it is assembled, the seam lines add to the detail and do not need to be filled in. Will this kit get the Gundariumsmith's Yellow Seal of Approval? We'll see how the other weapons fair.

Mallet: Bandai could not be any more creative with this name. Seriously though, a rocket propelled hammer in the shape of a Taiko drum should have a more interesting name than 'mallet.' Besides the name, the weapon itself is the most interesting weapon in the kit. With three thrusters on the back and an interesting pattern throughout, this mallet has a lot of potential! I might have to paint this up some day!

The Kagijime is a pair of claws made to look like a certain mutant's retractable claws. Though I cannot think of any uses for these claws, the handles fit in Sengoku Astray's hands snugly, and in the right pose, the claws are pretty convincing.

Somewhere between the Kagijime and the sticker application for other weapons are the single piece weapons. The Jushite, Pike, Naginata and three Kunai do not require instruction, so they are sort of inserted in parts of the instruction with other weapons. The Jushite, Naginata and Kunai are not bad looking, however, I cannot say the same for the Pike - it is much too short to be intimidating or practical.

This is where the kit really goes downhill. The Rosary seems to be a sad excuse to add plastic to this kit. Not only does this two piece accessory serve no purpose, it does not even sit right on the neck! The back end of the rosary ends up on the lower back of the head and lifts the front side when the head moves from the straight-forward position.
I'm calling the second party foul on Matsuri Weapon. Not cool, Bandai, not cool.

The last part of the instructions shows the Water Spider. This pair of discs were made specifically for the Sengoku Astray. The tabs on the back side are used to friction fit with Sengoku Astray's feet (specifically the "toe gaps"). Though the concept is okay and the fit is great, why did they have to be discs? Who in their right mind would display their Sengoku Astray with these silly looking discs under its feet? At least the adapters allow for these to be used in other applications such as shields.
Does the Water Spider deserve a strike? I am quite on a fence on this item, the idea and execution is almost perfect, but they look so silly for the instructed use!

In Closing
I expected this kit to be all sorts of lame. Trying to keep my standards relatively low, I could not help but to think this kit pales in comparison to the Hyper Gunpla Battle Weapons in more ways than one. If you want to recreate the last scene of Gundam Build Fighters, you could grab this kit for the Axe and Mallet. However, not much else can be said for the rest of the kit. There are many other Build Custom weapon sets that are so much better for customizing Gunpla.
In closing, I cannot give the Matsuri Weapon my Yellow Seal of Approval. There are too many negative aspects of this kit that I cannot get over. Hopefully the next kit I review will be more attractive.

Gundam Build Fighters Try Episode 19

Today on Mecha Analysis, we look at episode 20 of Gundam Build Fighters Try. Something to keep in mind when looking at the Gunpla: Returning from Gundam Build Fighters, the ones responsible for mechanical design of Gundam Build Fighters Try are as follows,

  • Kunio Okawara: THE Gundam designer, designing the original RX-78-2, and Zaku II along with many designs through the years. He's had his hand in Zeta, ZZ, 0080, F90, F91, 0083, Victory, G Gundam, 08th, Wing, X, Turn A, SEED, 00, Unicorn, and many other non-Gundam anime. Holy crap this list is long.
  • Not much is said about Junichi Akutsu, Junya Ishigaki, and Kenji Teraoka.
  • Kanetake Ebikawa, though has been working as a mechanical designer since the late 90s with anime like Blue Submarine No.6 and Full Metal Panic!, did not start designing for the Gundam franchise until 2007 with Mobile Suit Gundam 00. Other notable works include Gunpla Builders Beginning G, Gundam AGE, and Euerka Seven: AO.

Episode 20
The epic conclusion to a character we basically just met has come to an end. I remember short story arcs like this in Gundam AGE. It was one of the annoying parts of the show. Here we see a similar thing happening where the writers continue to introduce new characters that are seemingly important, throwing them away as soon as they're defeated (through death in Gundam AGE). When will the writers continue developing the synergy between the suits? At this point I don't think it will happen.

Denial Gundam

Two new features are displayed by the Denial Gundam before his inevitable defeat. We see he can manipulate his hair to use as a weapon and we see his fists able to produce blades (assumed to be made of Plavsky Particles).

Will Denial Gundam have any other features? The world will never know.

Try Burning Gundam

After a dismal display of lame, Try Burning Gundam's RG core lights up and the fire of battle is lit once again. Will the writers explain how the RG core works (or even what it is)? See how great of a job they did explaining what or where Arian is, I don't think we'll ever know what the RG core is.

With this revitalized form, we see the Try Burning Gundam emit five plavsky particle versions of itself to thoroughly mess up the Denial Gundam (with a combination of moves Sekai likes to call Seiken Shippu Soten Hagan Senko Ryusei Reppaku)

Sekai then finishes the battle off with the Bakunetsu God Finger.

I guess that's a cool way to include G Gundam's ultimate technique, shame the effect parts are not included in Try Burning Gundam's kit. I guess I'll be getting HGFC G Gundam purely for the Bakunetsu God Finger effect parts.

Crossbone Gundam Full Cloth

We finally get to see this suit in acti- nevermind, still a cameo. At least we see one of his defensive skills. Is it actually an I-field?

I think that's it for now. I'm not sure what to think about next week's episode of Build Fighters Try, hopefully I can unsee what I saw in the episode preview. See you all tomorrow for G no Reconguista (or whenever it comes out).

Gundam G no Reconguista Episode 20

We continue Mecha Analysis with episode 21 of Gundam G No Reconguista. Something to keep in mind when looking at the mechanical designs of Gundam G No Reconguista: The ones responsible for mechanical design are as follows,

  • Akira Yasuda, known for designing mechs in Turn A Gundam, Code Geass and Overman King Gainer.
  • Kimitoshi Yamane, notable for mechanical designs in G Gundam, Gundam SEED, SEED Destiny, SEED Stargazer, IGLOO, and Eureka Seven: AO
  • Not much can be found about Ippei Gyobu. I think he's new.

Episode 21
A lot of nice animation in the action scenes this episode. One thing that continues to stand out to me is the respect people have for their surrounding, especially for the delicate ecosystems that exist in space colonies.

Gaeon

As we saw in the previous episode, the Gaeon has additional armaments attached to the arms and the back. The back-mounted finger-like beam weapons can be used as funnels (or disposable rocket-propelled beam rifles?). We also see the Gaeon attach to the Conque de Venus, also referred to as "The Oven."

Conque de Venus reminds me of the Apsalus III from 08th MS Team. I like the design, though we will probably never see it as a kit (or in the anime ever again).

Gastima

Besides getting owned by the G-Self in a fist fight, a feature we see on the Gastima is the armaments on the right shoulder. We see it fire a beam weapon followed by a drum of rockets that slide out from the side. The more I see of this mobile suit, the more I grow apathetic towards it. I like the asymmetry, but man is it not memorable.

Z'Gocky

I was laughing at the line in the image above. It is a direct reference to the amphibious mobile suits of the Universal Century, more specifically the Z'Gok. We do not see too much on this mobile suit except for some sort of spinning weapon in the mobile suit's palm. I'm not sure what to think about this mobile suit, but I do like the legacy it carries.

G-Lucifer

This was an unexpected entrance for me. I always thought the G-Lucifer was to descend from the heavens and own whatever was in its path. Instead, we have the two side characters pilot it out of a G-IT warehouse, stolen in the name of Captain Mask!

Though nothing more is seen about this mobile suit, I am really happy that it did not follow the expected formula of suit introduction. I am thinking it will be handed over to the Masked man and will eventually become the rival suit against Bellri and his G-Self. But that is only a prediction, anything can happen at this point.

That is all for now. I hope you stick around, I have a feeling much more content between Morgenroete Munitions and myself will be coming up! See you next week!

Episode 19
I was not able to post last week's Mecha Analysis of G no Reconguista until last night. The rushed article is now available, but it is terribly written. Oh well, that ship has sailed. It is time for some epic fist-based conversation!

Team Titan (Teen Titans?)

According to the back story, Junya was a former student of the Jigen Haoh School, but ended up running off because he was denied a secret technique from the master. He now dukes it out against Sekai with his Denial Gundam.
Junya's team, named Team Titan is composed of two other suits that end up being cannon fodder - Gundash Blastor Gundam and Abulhool Plus. These two see a little action facing off between Yuuma and Fumina, but ultimately they are destroyed with no significance to the plot.

Gundash Blastor Gundam is based on  the Victory Gundam mobile suit Gunblaster. It is equipped with a normal beam rifle, but it also includes what looks like the V Dash backpack and some larger weapon that disappears mid-fight. Where did it go? The world may never know...

The Abulhool Plus is based on Gundam Abulhool from the manga side stories Mobile Suit Gundam 00P and 00F. It's 'Plus' namesake comes from the Universal Century variants of Delta and Zeta Gundams - Delta Plus and Zeta Plus. Like its base kit, the Abulhool Plus transforms into a flight mode and in this case, stays in flight mode for the whole episode before transforming into a large ball of fire.

The showcase suit of this episode is the Denial Gundam. It's features have some similarities to Build Burning Gundam (for good reason), and because Junya came from the same martial arts school, similar moves are used. But as the story goes, Junya has picked up other martial arts along the way

For some strange reason, Junya also has a parallel Burning Burst Mode. The post-credits scene and cliff hanger has left more questions on Junya's ability not as a Gunpla builder, but as a human being - is he really on the level of Sei Iori while being a master of multiple martial arts? How is that possible for someone under 19? I'll wait until next episode to pass judgment on Junya, but right now he does not interest me in any way - not his Gunpla, not his character.

That's it for now, I'll catch you all tomorrow for G no Reconguista, and if you have interest in Gunpla, consider signing up for the Gunpla Lollapalooza (links on the top of the page) hosted by Brent and based in /r/Gunpla. It should be a fun time: hope to see your entry there!

Episode 20
I took a lot longer than I expected to post this. I'll be brief...

Poligit

A faction supposedly named Ten Police use this suit. Seems like a standard grunt suit.

Grod

It seems like everything the Grod uses for weapons are based on the Psycommu systems of the Universal Century. At this point, I'm still not convinced that this kit is interesting.

Gastima

I thought it was called the Jaion, I guess it's named Gastima. Still unsure of the actual name, this mobile suit focuses on close range attacks.

Besides it being a complete badass, the suit also features a beam shield on it shoulder. If a kit were to come out of this suit, I might just have to pick one up.

Gaeon

In this episode, we see the Gaeon gain its full array of weapons. It is equiped with two arm-mounted shields and 2 sets of back mounted beam sabers, almost like two large hands. I really like the animation of the Gaeon as it equipped its armorments.

Not much to write about this suit besides how cool it would be for the beam, though I'm not sure if I'm interested in the kit that released this month.

That's it for the belated Mecha Analysis entry. I will see you all in a few hours.

Today on Mecha Analysis, we look at episode 18 of Gundam Build Fighters Try.

Episode 18
After last week's relatively disappointing episode, hope for anything interesting this week was pretty low.  It's easy to get hyped for the Star Winning Gundam Real Mode, but looking at the story structure, I can only think of the three episode side stories in Gundam AGE littered through the latter half of the series - first episode introduction, second episode flashback (to make the characters seem important), and the character's death in the third episode - though death is unlikely in this anime, it still bothers me that this format is still a thing.
Terrible story aside, the showcase of mecha this episode was quite great. Star Winning Gundam, no doubt, takes the spotlight with Fumina's Real Mode.

Team SD-R

This group of triplets work as seen in the last episode, Snibal-Drago-Gira is created combining three similar looking SD Gundams. Their main attacks are multi-colored beams from the mouth of each dragon.

Their main defense are these particle shields with the three SD heads in the pattern. These shields might be okay for each individual SD Gundam, but for the dragon it seems impractical - couldn't anyone just attack from the side or back?

The SDR seems to have the ability to bind their opponent using an attack from their hands. Needless to say, Sekai gets out of this bind though shear force. Sekai's a monster.

Oh yeah, SDR's hands also have a drill function, because what's a mech anime without drills? Oh doesn't typically have drills...

Team Try Hards

This team is starting to work together, but I feel the synergy is lacking. How does Fumina continue to claim she's a support unit if she's not actually supporting anyone? Though she helped Yuuma get out of the castle, she does not seem to have anything that resembles her previous functions. Hopefully I'm proven wrong, but that is how I currently feel about Star Winning Gundam's performance.

I understand she changed from depending on other's strength to find her own strength, but that does not mean she needs to rid her suit of any supporting functions.

I was somewhat uneasy about Full Burnen. The original BWS had rockets, but ever since the upgrade, I don't think Yuuma ever used rockets. I thought he took them out for better mobility or something. Luckily that is not the case.

Lightning Gundam shows off a new function of the new beam rifle. It can attach directly to the Lightning Gundam with a piece from the Back Weapon System Mk-II. I wonder if that's possible with the kit - it looks pretty sweet, at least in the anime.

Try Burning Gundam continues to use his martial arts to get out of every situation. Despite nothing truly new about his suit, I am happy to hear more from Sei (through China) about the origin of Build Burning Gundam.

Real Mode

Star Winning Gundam may not show any defining support functions, however, it has a special feature that has been teased for quite some time - Real Mode. This mode transforms the SD Gundam into a somewhat regular proportioned suit.

By doing this, she sacrifices the funnel capability, but gains immense amounts of power (I'm assuming through the generators that were originally for the funnel's function). It seems she thinks that trade-off is worth it.

Using the generators scattered throughout the body, Fumina can use her main attack, Winning Beam - a 'W' shaped beam that comes from the 'V'-Fin (W-Fin?).

Other than that, her main weapon is the same as the SD form - the beam rifle/blade...gunblade? It definitely looks really nice with the extended beam effect on there.

While going through collecting screenshots, I noticed there is a silhouette that flashes on the screen during the Real Mode transformation. This is not the first time this has happened. I forget which one had the silhouette last time, but it was of another SD Gundam. This time there really is no parallel, so which Gundam is it and why is it labeled 'ZII?'

That is all I have for now, I hope to see you all tomorrow for G no Reconguista. That episode should be exciting!

And don't forget, the first annual Gunpla Lollapalooza has commenced! Register for a spot to compete by clicking the link on the navigation bar in the header, or by clicking the banner on the side. I hope to see you there!
